This yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations. In 1988, Resolution WHA42.19 was passed, calling for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day, every year on 31 May.
The theme for this year’s WNTD underscores the imperative to shield children from tobacco industry interference.
*Theme and Objective:* This year’s theme centers on halting the tobacco industry’s targeting of youth with harmful products. It aims to raise awareness and prompt policymakers to enact measures safeguarding young people from the tobacco industry’s manipulative tactics.
*Youth Tobacco Use:* Globally, an estimated 37 million young people aged 13–15 use tobacco. In the WHO European Region, 11.5% of boys and 10.1% of girls in this age bracket are tobacco users.
*Tobacco Industry Tactics:* The tobacco industry seeks to replenish its customer base by targeting the next generation. It exploits tax regulations, bringing affordability, using enticing advertising methods, leveraging platforms like social media and streaming services.
*Emerging Trends:* Electronic cigarettes and nicotine pouches are increasingly popular among youth. In some countries, rates of e-cigarette use among adolescents surpass traditional cigarette smoking rates.
*Call to Action:* WNTD 2024 underscores the urgency of protecting current and future generations from the tobacco industry’s harmful practices and holding them accountable.
