Periodontics is that branch of dentistry, which deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of pathologic conditions of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth and dental implants.

The department of Periodontology GDCH-Jamnagar, was established in 1991. It is committed in achieving academic excellence, providing optimal oral health care and high quality periodontal treatment with special emphasis on oral health promotion and oral disease prevention. It is involved in a rich amalgamation of scientific enquiry and comprehensive dental care service. It treats on an average 100 patients daily and has state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure to render good services to patients.

Advanced treatment modalities like latest regenerative techniques, aesthetic surgery, Perioplastic surgery, Laser surgery, Microsurgery and implants are available. It meets international protocols of sterilization to safe guard our patients and dentists from cross contamination.

This department offers Undergraduate as well as Postgraduate training facilities.

The Department of Public Health Dentistry is the specialty of dentistry that promotes oral health as well as the prevention and control of dental diseases by assessing the oral health needs of the community, developing and implementing oral health policy, and providing programs and services that address oral health issues.

This department serves the objectives like providing high quality education, conducting scholarly research and acting as a resource service unit in public health dentistry.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) OMFS department perfoms examination dignosis and treatment of oral and maxillofacial disease patient with exodontia , minor or major surgeries.

Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology

Oral medicine specialists are “physician of mouth”. This department is the face of institute where patient is received first. Department is imparting modern scientific methods for diagnosis of various diseases of oral and maxillofacial region and oral cancer. It is a center for screening of various pre cancerous conditions and lesions. We also run a ‘tobacco cessation center’ in collaboration with public health department.

Department is equipped with dental chairs, intra oral cameras, pulp testers, punch biopsy apparatus, and specialized treatment options like TENS. In the department all sophisticated methods of autoclave and standard sanitization protocol is followed. All staff members and technicians are registered TLD card holders.

Oral radiology section is designed and works as per AERB norms and provides facilities for all dental radiographic investigations to patients. Radiology department is equipped with latest equipment’s like digitalized Orthopantomogram machine along with lateral cephalogram, automatic film processor, intra oral dental X-ray units, dark room with safe light facilities.

  • Centre for diagnosis of diseases of oral and maxillofacial structures and oral cancer
  • Centre for screening of various pre cancerous conditions and lesions
  • Diagnosis of oral manifestations of systemic diseases
  • Conducting biopsy procedures
  • Specialized treatment options available such as TENS
  • Detailed work up and formulation of comprehensive treatment plan for Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) and Orofacial pain patients.
  • Management of a Tobacco Cessation Centre
  • All the dental radiographic investigations are available to the patient such as Digital OPG, Lateral Cephalogram, TMJ views, lateral oblique views of mandible, occlusal view and Intra oral periapical views.
  • Fully comprehensive teaching schedule of lectures and clinical discussions with the help of audio visual aids is followed
  • Conducting research and publish articles in various scientific journals
  • Updating the scientific knowledge of interns and students through books and journals

Oral Pathology and Microbiology

The department is located on the third floor with ample sunlight and ventilation. The department has two practical halls where Dental Anatomy, Oral Histology, Oral Pathology practical classes are conducted. The laboratories are equipped with audio-visual teaching aids, microscopes, microscopic study slides, anatomical and pathology specimen and study charts. The department is having histopathology laboratory and museum.

Deals with the following procedures

  • The department primarily deals with teaching of two subjects of dental curriculum.
      1. Human oral anatomy and dental histology: first year BDS students are taught with theory lectures and practical classes which includes carving of teeth on wax blocks and study of microscopic slides of normal oral tissues.
      2. Oral Pathology and microbiology: Second and third year BDS students are taught with theory lectures and practical classes which includes study of microscopic slides and pathology specimen.
  • The students learn healthy and diseased oral and Paraoral structures there by trained in the diagnosis of oral lesions.
  • The branch of dentistry deals with Identification of healthy and diseased tissues in the orofacial region clinically and microscopically. Thus to arrive at final diagnosis of oral lesions, study of biopsy, its processing and examination of slides for final diagnosis are important steps, so as to treat the disease.
  • The department is also involved in teaching of forensic odontology and conducts training for age estimation.

Department of Pedodontics or Pediatric Dentistry

Pedodontics or Pediatric Dentistry is an age defined specialty that provides primary and comprehensive, Preventive and Therapeutic oral health care for infants and Children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs.

The implicit in the philosophy of children’s dentistry is a commitment to consider the child’s feelings, to gain the child’s confidence and co-operation to perform the treatment in kind and sympathetic manner, to be concerned with not only providing the treatment currently required but also promoting child’s future dental health by stimulating the attitude and behavior regarding dental care.
